Just one last question please...
When Tom Cruise decided to take one more question at the press conference at the Shilla Hotel Saturday, organized to promote his new film ¡°Mission Impossible: 2,¡± he probably was not ready for what was coming.
¡°You¡¯re short by Hollywood standards. Do you have any problems with that? How did you overcome them?¡± There was a moment of silence, a snort of a laugh from Cruise, and then a haughty reply, ¡°I extended the interview for questions like this?¡± The out-of-context query by the reporter from a local broadcaster was just one of many problems with the high-profile media event, where very few seemed aware that what may be customary journalistic practice here is plain rude by international standards.
One example was the disorderly way people asked questions. An organizer from the Korean branch of United International Pictures (UIP) designated a journalist to ask the next question, but a semi-celebrity, the wife of a famous actor here, cut in instead and asked two long inquiries.
This happened on two more occasions, and Cruise looked confusedly between several reporters who were fighting to speak.
And then there was the never-ending popping of flash bulbs. Photographers continued to snap away despite repeated requests from the organizers to stop because the lights distracted the guests - Cruise and director John Woo.
But nothing beat the questions themselves, which were offbeat at best.
¡°Tom, which do you think is more handsome, you or that ice sculpture? (in Cruise¡¯s image, carved for the event),¡± ¡°Could you explain the difference between the first movie and its sequel?¡± ¡°Would you ever consider starring in a Korean movie?¡± ¡°What do you think about Korean women?¡± ...
Some of the questions didn¡¯t have to sound so bad. If the journalists had utilized the professional interpreter on hand, she probably could¡¯ve polished up some of the coarser questions. But, most Korean journalists asked their questions in English, often giving Cruise raw, blunt versions to answer to.
Cruise was clearly lost on some of them. For example, a broadcasting station reporter started out her question with a ¡°joke.¡± ¡°I don¡¯t know if you¡¯re really Tom Cruise or Dougray Scott (co-star in film) playing Tom.¡± Don¡¯t get it? No one else in the room did either, least of all the actor, who looked blank and had no comment.
¡°It¡¯s like they¡¯re more interested in showing off their English skill than asking questions,¡± said an American visitor.
¡°Wow, that was so embarrassing,¡± said a foreign reporter covering the story for a local daily after the conference was over.
But from another, non-traditional perspective, the conference did just what it was supposed to - prove that Cruise was a star. Throughout the entire event, the actor remained very polite and genial.
To the ¡°height¡± question, he quipped, ¡°Well, I keep getting casting offers, so I guess Hollywood doesn¡¯t have a problem with my height,¡± which drew laughs.
And to the ice sculpture query, Cruise left it at, ¡°You judge for yourself which of us is more handsome.¡± (June 5, 2000 By Kim Mi-hui Staff reporter)
