Surrendering to the government's strong actions and mounting criticism from the public, unionized railroad workers began to return to work yesterday, ending the four-day-long strike that crippled the nation's railway operations.
The strike, which began Saturday, has disrupted passenger and freight train operations across the country as well as the metropolitan transportation system, in particular, causing inconveniences during the morning and evening rush hours.
Just a few hours prior to the union's decision to withdraw, the Korean National Railroad announced it had dismissed 624 workers who took part in the walkout as of Monday evening, while ordering relevant regional railway authorities to file necessary documents for punishment on the 104 walkout leaders.

Kraft Foods said Tuesday it will take steps to fight obesity by cutting down the size of single-serving packages and eliminating all in-school marketing campaigns.
The nation's No. 1 food company's products include Nabisco cookies and crackers, Oscar Meyer meats as well as Kraft cheeses. Efforts to combat obesity will include steps "to improve existing products and provide alternative choices," Kraft said.
"Just as obesity has many causes, it can be solved only if all sectors of society do their part to help," said a statement from co-CEO Betsy Holden.
