Cheonggye stream's rebirth begins
1970년대 이후 개발의 상징이었던 서울 도심의 청계고가도로를 걷어내고 청계천을 맑은 물이 흐르는 하천으로 되살리는 대역사가 오늘 시작됩니다.
The work to restore Cheonggyecheon, a stream that had flown through the central part of Seoul until it was covered four decades ago, will begin today. Engineers will undertake dismantling an elevated road above the covered stream, which starts from Gwanggyo intersection.
The restoration project, which will cost approximately 360 billion won, is scheduled for completion in September 2005.
City officials have said citizens' understanding and cooperation will be essential to reduce the traffic congestion that will inevitably be caused by the project.

The lives of 6 million children under 5 could be saved every year if flu shots and other low-cost measures to prevent or treat disease were more widely used, global health experts say.
Every year, nearly 11 million children worldwide die before their fifth birthday, most from preventable causes such as diarrhea, pneumonia, neonatal problems and malaria. Malnutrition is a major factor in more than half those deaths, researchers estimate.
"The easy gains have been made," said UNICEF spokeswoman Marjorie Newman-Williams. "We have now plateaued because the strategies we have to put in place are more difficult."
