Twenty-one Korean firms were included in the top-200 emerging-market companies list compiled by a U.S.-based weekly magazine BusinessWeek, according to its July 14 edition.
Korea's top chipmaker, Samsung Electronics, secured the No. 2 slot in the ranking based on market capitalization, coming after China Mobile, one of the world's largest mobile service operators.
BusinessWeek said in its article that the emerging markets "haven't exactly had an easy time of it lately, what with SARS battering Asia and political uncertainties plaguing Latin America."

The foster mother of two young boys who died after being left five hours in a sweltering sport utility vehicle was arrested for investigation of child endangerment.
Sheriff Lee Baca said earlier Tuesday that those responsible for leaving the children in the car would be charged with child endangerment and possibly manslaughter.
"Vehicles are not playpens," he said. "Vehicles are not baby sitters. And vehicles, when they are not properly ventilated, are death traps."
